Pray 21 Guide

Understanding the necessity of prayer is not enough. In order for it to become a part of our life, it needs to become something

Christians look forward to doing. We are convinced most people don’t enjoy prayer because they have never been taught how to pray. That’s where this simple prayer journal can help. Using several prayer models out of the Bible and having some guides to make prayer more personal, this booklet is designed to bring joy into your time with God. When you discover the beauty of daily conversation with Him, you’ll experience more of the presence of God that will change your life. READ MORE…

DAY 1 - a certain time

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went out to a solitary place, where he prayed (Mark 1:35)

Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. (Daniel 6:10)

Jesus got up very early in the morning to spend time with His Heavenly Father. In order for prayer to work, we should do the same. Make a daily appointment with God and keep it.

Of the many truths in Daniel 6, one concerns Daniel’s prayer. Three times a day, he set aside a special time to pray.

Nowhere does God command us to do the same, but there is wisdom here. Wisdom would suggest a special time, or several briefer times, set aside each day to meet with God in prayer. A time we prize. A time we protect. A time we prioritize.

reflect:

What special time will you set aside in the next 21 days to talk and listen to God?

prayer focus:

Ask God to give you an increased hunger to spend more time in prayer, worship, and His Word.

DAY 2 - DRAW CLOSE TO GOD

Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. Psalm 24:3-4

Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. (Psalm 32:5)

How can I sincerely draw close to a God who is all powerful, all knowing, and fully aware of all the reasons I do not belong in His presence? Is it really safe? Is this really what God desires?

Today we draw near to God. We do this by uncovering the ‘ugly’ side. We confess our sin. We reveal the part of our life that puts His love for us to the test (at least in our minds). And praise God again... He proves His love. He forgives and loves us anyway.

reflect:

It’s not until we recognize the depth of our sin that we realize the depth of God’s love. What sins have you minimized to ‘little mistakes’ versus acknowledging they are what nailed Jesus to the cross?

prayer focus:

Ask God to reveal anything in your life that would hinder your ability to come into his presence.

DAY 3 - worship with a whole heart

Praise the Lord. I will extol the Lord with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. (Psalm 111:1)

My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, Lord, I will seek. (Psalm 27:8)

In You, O God, I  find my identity. I  long to recapture a spirit of genuine worship, a personal revival of  heart, soul, and spirit.

Heaven and earth declare Your glory, O God, and therefore so do I.

All of creation submits to You, and so my life is surrendered to You. I am willing to do Your will. How can I be in Your presence and not be changed? I long to be the kind of worshiper that You have been looking for, fully devoted to You. I worship You with my whole heart.

reflect:

How has being in God’s presence changed you?

Because everything we do can be an act of worship, how does this affect your view and more so, your attitude about common, everyday tasks?

prayer focus:

Ask God to Lead you more fully into his will so that every day of your life will be worship, offering a living sacrifice to God.

DAY 4 - set the desire of your heart

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. (Psalm 27:4)

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)

When it comes to setting our hearts in the proper place, there may be no better example outside of Jesus than an obscure often

forgotten figure in the Old Testament named Ezra. We learn that the hand of God was all over this man (Ezra 7:6,9,28). That he successfully led 5,000 people with 30 tons of precious metals on a four month, 900 mile journey from Babylon to Jerusalem (Ezra 8). That he was supremely concerned about holiness and the purity of God’s people (Ezra 9). And that he ultimately led God’s people to repentance like few other accounts we read in scripture (Ezra 10).

So what’s the point? The point is that all of Ezra’s success can be Biblically directed back to the place where he set his heart. This is the key to Ezra’s life of leadership and a clear guide to success with God in our own lives. Set your heart to the study of God’s word. Set your heart to doing God’s word. And set your heart to giving God’s word away.

reflect:

The world needs more people like Ezra. Where will you set your heart?

prayer focus:

Tell the Lord that he is the top priority of your life with nothing even close in second place. Ask him  to fill your heart, all of it, so God’s  love and grace can flow richly to everyone you come in

contact with.

day 5 - walk in wisdom and revelation

Send me your light and your faithful care, let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell.  (Psalm 43:3)

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. (Ephesians 1:17-19a)

As we continue our way into this consecrated season of prayer and fasting, we are coming together as a church praying that God would lead us, open our eyes, and give us the moving power of His Spirit in a fresh and awakening way. This prayer is a heart- felt, guttural, straining desire to return to True Reality, God’s light and life. We know that Christ Jesus has resurrected our souls by His grace and that light and life, along with wisdom and revelation, come only from Him.

reflect:

Where have you sensed God giving you the gift of wisdom and discernment in your life?

James tells us that God will give us wisdom if we ask. (James 1:5) Will you ask him for wisdom? He promises to give it to you when you ask.

prayer focus:

Tell the Lord to open your eyes to see more clearly and your ears to hear anything that He would desire to speak. Pray for a Spirit of wisdom and revelation to know him more.

day 6 - be  filled with power and purpose

For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. For you, God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. (Psalm 61:3 & 5)

My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries; my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes. (Psalm 92:11)

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)

As we near the end of the first week of prayer, you may be tired. You may be wondering how you will be able to go for two more weeks. It reminds me of how often in life we feel tired. Physically tired, spiritually tired, emotionally tired. We have so many things pulling at our time and making us weary. It takes discipline to keep our devotions at the top of the priority list. Especially, when there are so many other things fighting to be at the top of the list. The Bible is very clear though, in that if we are to bear fruit we must stay connected to the vine. He will prune us to bear fruit and cut off what is not bearing fruit for His purpose. God does have a plan and a purpose for each and every one of us. We must remain in Him to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. If we put God  first and stay connected to Him, He will give us the strength and power to do the tasks He has set before us.

reflect:

What areas of your life are not bearing fruit and can be pruned?

prayer focus:

Pray for God to help you stay connected to the Vine. Prune out  the things that are not important and get in the way of your time with Him.

day 7 - Produce the fruit of the spirit

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22)

Once we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, it takes up residence within us. The apostle Paul gives some great advice for loving and living in the Spirit in Galatians chapter 5. He tells us we are called to serve one another humbly; to love others like we love ourselves. He goes on to list the fruit that comes from living in step with God.

  • Love

  • Joy

  • Peace

  • Patience

  • Kindness

  • Goodness

  • Faithfulness

  • Gentleness

  • Self-control

reflect:

Which fruits do you think you and those in your family bear easily and often?

Which fruits do you think you should ask God to help you bear more of?

prayer focus:

Pray for God to help your family and you to produce the Fruit of the Spirit and love each other in a way that pleases God. Pray each Fruit of the Spirit into your life.

Day 8 - Connect with God relationally

“Our Father in heaven...”

You have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15 NLT)

The Bible also says we can cry out to God as “Abba, Father” That is an intimate term that is similar to the word, “Daddy.” If we have God as our daddy, it changes our approach to Him. We go from feeling like terrified slaves of an unknowable God to being children who can run up and sit in His lap to be loved on by and learn from Him. We see Him as someone to run to when in trouble rather than someone to hide from.

Even though God is the Creator of all things, we enjoy a relationship with Him that is unique from all of His other creations. We are all His children, literally the sons and daughters of God, and He has created us in His image.

God loves for us to call Him our Father. Establish your intimate relationship with Him and thank Him for the relationship you have with Him.

reflect:

How do you know God loves you like a father?

In what ways do you acknowledge him in your life as being a father?

prayer focus:

Thank God for being a father to you. Thank God for adopting you as His child. Call him father and thank him for that relationship.

Day 9 - Worship his name

“...Hallowed be Your Name...”

God’s name is a place of protection—the righteous can run there and be safe (Proverbs 18:10 MSG).

The word “hallow” means “sanctify”. The same Greek word stands behind both English words. Jesus tells us to pray, “Let your name be sanctified.” “Sanctify” can mean “make holy” or “treat as holy”. When God sanctifies us, it means that he makes us holy. But when we sanctify God, it means that we treat him as holy.

So Jesus is teaching us to pray that God would cause his name to be treated as holy.  What are some of His Names?

  • God is My Righteousness – Jeremiah 23:6

  • God is My Sanctifier  – Leviticus 20:7-8

  • God is My Healer – Exodus 15:26

  • God is My Provider – Genesis 22:14

  • God is My Banner of Victory – Exodus 17:15

  • God is My Peace – Judges 6:24

  • God is My Shepherd – Psalm 23:1

  • God is Always There – Ezekiel 48:35

reflect:

What does it mean to treat God as holy?

What are we asking God to do when we pray that he cause his name to be treated as holy?

prayer focus:

Thank God for His names and what they mean to you. Pray each of these name over your life and into your family.

day 10 - Pray his agenda first

“...Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven...”

He will always give you all you need from day to day if you will make the Kingdom of God your primary concern (Luke 12:31 TLB).

Sometimes in our prayers we don’t even know what to ask of God. Sometimes our own ideas of solutions are limited to what we can see and understand.

God has instructed us to pray that His will be done on earth just as it is in Heaven. He instructed us to pray that His kingdom would come.

Today if you have a situation that is challenging you, or troubling you, invite God to establish His kingdom in your circumstance. Put aside your own best thinking and invite Him to work things out in a way that will show our God is trustworthy and faithful and in a way that will effect results that will bring glory to our God.

reflect:

Are you praying for God’s will in your life or are you praying for your will to be done?

prayer focus:

Pray God’s priorities: Saving the Lost, Guiding those in authority, and His will for your life.

Day 11 - DEPEND ON HIM FOR EVERYTHING

“...Give us this day our daily bread...”

I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! (Psalm 121:1-2 NLT).

Jesus was not telling His disciples to pray only for bread. But bread was a staple in the diet of the Jews, and had been so for many years. Furthermore, bread was a powerful symbol of God’s provision for His people in the Old Testament. We remember how God cared for the Israelites when they were in the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. God sent them daily bread, called manna.

This petition of the Lord’s Prayer, then, teaches us to come to God in a spirit of humble dependence, asking Him to provide what we need and to sustain us from day to day. We are not given license to ask for great riches, but we are encouraged to make our needs known to Him, trusting that He will provide.

reflect:

What are some “daily“ things you need to ask God for?

What are some things that you need that only God could provide?

prayer focus:

Ask God for what you want and need and then trust Him for the answer.

Day 12 - GET YOUR HEART RIGHT WITH GOD AND PEOPLE

“...Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors...”

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness(1 John 1:9).

This word debts could also be translated “sins.” Jesus meant that we as Christians need to pray for forgiveness on a regular, even daily basis. We are in debt to God for paying for our sins on Calvary. Jesus wanted us to get our heart right with him and then forgive those around us too. The God that forgave you is requiring you to forgive others.

reflect:

Who in your life needs to hear forgiveness from you?

prayer focus:

Ask God to check your heart and motives. Receive His forgiveness for any area that He brings to mind. Forgive anyone who has offended you in any way.

Day 13 - ENGAGE IN SPIRITUAL WARFARE

“...And do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from the evil one...”

For our struggle is not against  flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms .(Ephesians 6:12)

This is reminding us that we need to call on God’s help in the face of temptation. We’re calling on God’s help for strength through the trials of life and asking God for the strength to resist temptation.

The evil one wants to destroy our lives, but God wants us to live and live life to the fullest. When the enemy works against us, pray that God would deliver us from his grasp.

reflect:

What temptations in your life do you need help from God to conquer?

Where in your life do you feel the enemy working against you?

prayer focus:

Take your stand against the enemy and  fight the good fight of faith. Every lie that the enemy has told you should be replaced with the truth of God’s Word. Pray the word of God into your life.

Day 14 - Express faith in God’s ability

“...For yours is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever.”

“Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you” (Jeremiah 32:17).

With this last phrase the Lord’s Prayer ends just as it began. It draws our attention back to worshiping the all powerful God. His

Kingdom lasts forever and has all power and glory. He is the King of Kings sitting on the throne of your life. Nothing is too big or too hard for the Lord.

reflect:

What areas of your life needs total victory?

What are some things you need to declare?

prayer focus:

End your prayer time by reminding yourself of God’s ability. Return to praise and make your faith declarations.

“Yours is the Kingdom” – all rule belongs to You

“Yours is the Power” – all mightiness  flows from You

“Yours is the Glory” – Your victory shall be complete

Day 15 - THE OUTER COURT

Thanksgiving and Praise...

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name (Psalm 100:4).

In the Old Testament, the Tabernacle was the place where God came to meet his people. It was the closest they could come to God. As they entered the Tabernacle, they passed through seven stations as a protocol to enter God’s presence. The first one was the outer court.

People entered the Outer Court uttering praise. They literally gave thanks to God as they entered the outside of the Tabernacle. As you face this day, begin by thanking and praising God for his blessings, for his wisdom, and for his strength.

reflect:

What are you most thankful and full of praise for?

How will you begin your day full of thanksgiving and praise?

prayer focus:

As the people of God entered the Tabernacle, they came in with thanksgiving on their lips. Thanking God for all the blessings in your life is a great way to begin.  Think of a fresh reason why you love and appreciate God.

Day 16 - THE BRAZEN ALTAR

The Cross of Jesus

Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s (Psalm 103:2-5)

An altar, in the Old Testament, was a place of sacrifice. People provided clean animals as a sacrifice so that they would appear clean before God. At the cross, Jesus, the Lamb of God, gave the ultimate sacrifice for us, and in doing so made us appear clean before God once and for all. In the Old Testament, they provided the sacrifice to God. In the New Testament, God provided Jesus as the sacrifice for us.

As you go about your duties each day, keep in mind the sacrifice that God provided to make us appear clean before him, so we could live in relationship with him.

reflect:

What does the “redemption through his blood” mean to you?

How has it made a difference in your life?

prayer focus:

Pray these into your life today.

Salvation – God forgives all my sin

Healing – God heals all my diseases

Redemption – God rescues me from every attack

Transformation – God puts His love in me

Provision – God provides everything I need

Day 17 - THE LAVER

Cleansing and Preparing

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your

spiritual act of worship (Romans 12:1)

The next step in the Tabernacle was a bowl of water where people could wash. Checking your hearts and motives and then

surrendering your life to God is an important part of daily prayer.

Today, seek to surrender yourself as a sacrifice to God. More of God

in your life, less of yourself. Think about how you can sacrifice a part of your life that makes you less like God.

reflect:

What is holding you back from being more like God?

What can you sacrifice so that you can get closer to God?

What is God preparing you for?

prayer focus:

Repent from any known sin.

Offer your body to God.

Your tongue – to speak good and not evil

Your eyes – to see God and the needs of others

Your ears – to be   sensitive to His voice

Your hands – to do good to others

Your feet – to walk in God’s ways

Offer your mind to God (Philippians 4:8; Romans 12:2).

Ask God to give you the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

Day 18 - THE CANDLESTICK

The Holy Spirit

The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD (Isaiah 11:2)

The next piece of furniture in the Tabernacle was a seven- branched golden candlestick. The  fire represents the Holy Spirit. Every day you should invite the presence of the Holy Spirit into your life.

The candlestick represented light. It was made from gold, which symbolized purity, the further you went into the tabernacle, the closer you got to the light, and the nearer you got to the purity of the One True God. When Jesus came to earth, he identified himself as the Light of the world (John 8:12). He provided a way for us to get closer to God.

reflect:

How or to whom can you reflect the light of Jesus? Think of specific names and ideas unique to those people.

prayer focus:

Ask God for his Spirit to rest on you in this manner:

The Spirit of Wisdom

The Spirit of Understanding

The Spirit of Counsel

The Spirit of Might

The Spirit of Knowledge

The Fear of the Lord

Day 19 - THE TABLE OF SHEWBREAD

The Word of God

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful (Joshua 1:8)

A table with twelve loaves of bread represents the importance of reading God’s Word for daily sustenance. With this in mind, here are ways to nourish your soul:

Read God’s Word.

Claim His many great promises.

Ask for fresh revelation of the Word.

Take time to read and meditate on the Word.

Get a Word for the day.

reflect:

What ways will you feed yourself spiritually?

What Bible verse(s) nourishes your Spirit?

prayer focus:

Today, thank God for his Word. Ask him to show you Scripture that will nourish your Spirit and encourage you in your journey towards loving him more deeply and praying more often.

Day 20  - THE ALTAR OF INCENSE

Worship

“Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting of my hands as the evening sacrifice” (Psalms 141:2)

Scripture often likens incense to the prayers of God’s people (Ps. 141:2; Rev. 5:8). This makes sense when we consider what happened on the altar of incense. Fine spices were mixed together and left to smolder on the altar day and night (Ex. 30:7–8, 34–38), the ascending smoke symbolizing that what was offered there went up to God, much as our prayers go up to Him. Being set outside the veil, the priest would see the smoke penetrate the curtain into the Holy of Holies even though He could not see past the curtain.

This is much like us. We send up prayers and worship, but cannot see them enter heaven.

reflect:

What are somethings God has done for you?

prayer focus:

Today, in your prayer time, worship God for all he has done, for all he is doing, and for all the ways he has revealed himself to you.

Day 21 - THE ARK OF THE COVENANT

INTERCESSION

I urge, then,  first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:1-4)

The final place in the Tabernacle was the place where God’s presence dwelt. It was there that the high priest interceded on behalf of the people. In the New Testament, you and I are all called priests and instructed to intercede for others.

reflect:

Who needs your intercessory prayers?

Who will you start praying for today?

prayer focus:

Intercede for these today:

Those in authority

    spiritual authority

    civil authority

    family authority

    workplace authority

My family

My church

     pastors

    members

    vision/mission

My city, nation, and world

My needs
